Another summer outfit for R, inspired by a beautiful blue linen-cotton found at Darn Cheap. The skirt is a simple tiered skirt with an elastic waistband from Kids Clothes Sewing Lesson Book; it's the sort of style you could easily figure out yourself but from time to time it's nice to use a pattern. The one in the book has attached shorts underneath, but I didn't want those so I just left them off. There's really nothing much to say about this skirt except that you shouldn't make one of these if you don't like gathering!
The top is a free pattern from www.smalldreamfactory.com, widened a bit (too much, as it turns out - this is one that will definitely still fit next year!) and gathered a bit at front and back. As with the last one I made, I crossed the straps at the back. They are a bit loose, so some further adjustment will be required. The fabric is cotton jersey leftover from a previous project.
With more super-hot days coming up in Melbourne, loose skirts and singlets are going to be the things to wear!
Great outfit! I love skirts like that but I do have to be in quite a patient mood for all the gathering. I tried that singlet pattern when you first posted about it a couple years ago. The straps were too wide set for my daughter (an easy fix that I never got around to making), but I'd like to revisit the pattern as I know my girls would love it.
ReplyDeleteThanks Masha. Yes you have to get 'in the zone' for gathering! As for the singlet, I ignore the back strap placement and just figure that out after trying the almost-finished singlet on R. I also have some leeway with the front placement because I gather the front section and hold it up on her before finalising the width of the front.
DeleteI adore how tiered skirts look, but ugh, yes, so much gathering!!! This looks like the perfect outfit for a hot hot day. Even the too-big tank top looks breezy and cool in a way that a tight fitting one wouldn't.
ReplyDeleteThanks Inder. I've repositioned the straps a little so hopefully it won't look so baggy at the back, but yes, tight-fitting things aren't so good for hot weather so I'll just pretend it was deliberate!
DeleteAh yes, perfect outfit for the hot weather! I need to check out the top pattern as it is so sweet! the skirt... I hate gathering hahaha I sit down in front of a TV with my tin of pins and fabric, so the task is not too painful then haha
ReplyDeleteI agree, repetitive sewing jobs like that are best done in front of the telly! As is folding laundry :)
